Why Google Analytics Isn’t Enough: Building a Zero-Compromise Analytics Stack
If you hire an agency to handle your website analytics, 99% of the time, they’ll install Google Analytics 4 (GA4), verify that traffic is being recorded, and call it a day.
GA4 is a powerhouse for measuring acquisition and complex conversion funnels. But relying on it exclusively leaves massive blind spots in your understanding of user behavior. GA4 tells you what happened – how many people landed on a page, what they bought, and where they came from. But it is notoriously bad at telling you why.
Why did 80% of users abandon the checkout? Why is nobody clicking the primary call-to-action?
At Egret Digital, we don’t believe in guessing. That’s why our standard tracking deployment goes far beyond Google Analytics. We implement a multi-layered analytics stack – incorporating Metrica, Microsoft Clarity, and Clicky – to give us a 360° view of users.
But installing four analytics tools sounds like a recipe for a slow website, right? It would be, if we deployed them like a standard agency. Here’s a look at why we use these specific tools, and the technical Tag Manager wizardry we use to keep your website lightning fast.
The “Big Four” Analytics Stack
Each tool in our stack serves a highly specific purpose, filling in the gaps left by the others.
1. Google Analytics 4 · The Baseline
We still use GA4 because it remains the industry standard for tying website traffic to Google Ads performance. It is excellent for macro-level reporting, attribution modeling, and understanding broad traffic trends over time.
2. Metrica · The Behavioral Deep-Dive
While GA4 gives us the numbers, Metrica gives us the human element. Metrica includes a feature called Webvisor, which records actual – but anonymous – user sessions. We can literally watch a playback of a user’s mouse movements, scrolling, and clicks.
- Unique Value: Form analytics. Metrica shows us exactly which field in a lead generation form caused a user to hesitate, abandon, or encounter an error.
3. Microsoft Clarity · The Friction Finder
Microsoft Clarity is a brilliant, completely free tool that excels at identifying user frustration.
- Unique Value: It automatically tags sessions with “Rage Clicks” (when a user repeatedly clicks an element out of frustration, like a broken button) and “Dead Clicks” (clicks on non-interactive elements). It also leverages AI to summarise session takeaways, allowing our UX team to spot design flaws in minutes rather than hours.
4. Clicky · The Real-Time Truth
GA4 often suffers from data lag – sometimes taking 24 to 48 hours for data to fully populate. Clicky is an old-school, privacy-friendly, ultra-lightweight tool that acts as our real-time pulse check.
- Unique Value: We use Clicky to look at granular, individual visitor logs as they happen. If we launch a new campaign, Clicky tells us exactly what those first few visitors are doing second-by-second.
The Technical Magic: How We Protect Page Speed
You might be thinking: “If you add four tracking codes to my website, isn’t that going to destroy my page load speed?”
If we used the standard “Copy and Paste” method, yes. Most agencies fire all tracking tags on the Page View trigger in Google Tag Manager (GTM). This tells the browser to try and load heavy session-recording scripts at the exact same time it’s trying to load your website’s primary images, text, and CSS.
We engineer our GTM setups to respect the browser’s natural rendering timeline, ensuring your users (and Google’s Core Web Vitals) never feel the weight of our analytics stack.
Firing Early: Clicky and DOM Ready
Because Clicky is incredibly lightweight and doesn’t record heavy video sessions, we want it to fire as early as safely possible. We trigger Clicky on DOM Ready. This means the browser has parsed the basic HTML of the page, but hasn’t necessarily finished downloading heavy background images. This ensures we capture visitors who might bounce very quickly, giving us highly accurate bounce rates without interrupting the visual load of the page.
Firing Late: Metrica and Clarity on Window Loaded
Session recording tools like Yandex Metrica and Microsoft Clarity are “heavy” scripts. If you load them too early, the user will stare at a blank white screen while the browser processes the tracking code.
To prevent this, we trigger these tools on Window Loaded. This is the absolute end of the page-loading lifecycle. It tells Google Tag Manager: “Wait until every single image, font, and piece of content has perfectly rendered for the user. Only once the user has a perfect experience, start loading the session recording tools in the background.”
The Agency Difference
Data is only useful if it’s accurate, actionable, and doesn’t compromise the user experience. By combining the macro-data of GA4, the behavioral insights of Metrica and Clarity, and the real-time speed of Clicky – all orchestrated perfectly through advanced Tag Manager triggers – we give our clients’ websites an advantage through deeper understanding.
We don’t just know how many people visited your site; we know exactly how they experienced it and crucially whether they liked what they found.
